Salinger’s early writing includes many characters invented and retired after a single story. But he soon settled on two “universes” of recurring characters, placing the Caulfield family (and related Gladwaller family) or Glass family in story after story. Sometimes these characters change over time, especially on the Caulfield side, but the repeated character appearances can be educational, as they shed light on some of our favorite stories.
